14 SEER systems feature an upgraded air handler fan motor to module controlled for money saving. Usually the same outside unit. Better, but still higher electric costs.

16 SEER systems feature a different air handler and condenser with larger heat exchange coils and both fan motor with module control inside and outside. Probably best bang for your buck.

18 SEER systems are almost completely controlled by computer boards and modular driven motors. Compressor is normally 2 stages and the system has more of a mind of its own. Less user friendly. Improved electric bill, slightly with less user satisfaction.

20+ SEER systems are only offered by a few manufactures and are often times very expensive. Completely computer controlled and quite complicated. Recommended only in certain cases.
